Cute Kameena : Nishant
Singh
Tall, lithe and
handsome, this Dubai born, 6’ 2” Delhi boy, son of an accountant , went all the
way up the educational ladder (IIM Kolkata) before he decided to call it quits and
shift to Mumbai. The call from a casting agent who spotted him on the Kolkata
metro came a few months before he could finish his IIM course. But that did not
deter this hero wannabe. He decided to quit his higher studies a few months shy
of his finals and follow his childhood dream of becoming an actor.
And yes, he says he identified with Imtiaz Ali's 'Tamasha' where the
character played by Ranbir Kapoor , was shown to leave behind his corporate
security for the world of performance. So it was quite poetic that Imtiaz
Ali, impressed by the realistic positioning of the romantic comedy, decided to
grace the occasion of it’s trailer release, with his presence.
Nothing new you’d say
. Absolutely Bollywood is full of such stories. So Nishant Singh’s entry into
the film world may not be termed novel but it certainly speaks of determination
and persevering attitude. Ask him whether his parents objected to his frittering
away of his IIM advantage and he smiles. I just left Kolkata and shifted to
Mumbai because the casting agent Raj, promised to provided me with both money and work. He’s in fact left
it to his younger brother, who’s a 98 % CAT scorer to fulfill those
aspirations.
It’s been five years
now since I’ve come to Mumbai. In that period I’ve managed to invest in a house
and take care of all my expenses without putting any load on my middle-class
parents. Mumbai and Bollywood especially has been kind to this struggler . I
had done a few modeling jobs earlier in order to earn that extra pocket money
and also won the Model of the year title from Elite. Then I did TV for 6 months
– I was the lead in the Zee TV prime time show ‘Ram Milaye Jodi’ and hit solid gold with the offer of lead in
the Vikram Bhatt directed film ‘Horror
Story’. ‘Bezubaan Ishq’ was my next release and thereafter I’ve been working on
‘Love Training’ essaying the role of a Love Guru to Shakti Kapoor, Rajpal Yadav
and Akhilendra Mishra, ‘Ishq Ne Krazzy kiya Re’ and ‘Cute Kameena’ which
releases on March 18 in around 500 screens across India alongside Karan Johar’s
‘Kapoor & Sons.’ Ask him who his favorite Directors are( the ones he’d like
to work with) ..pat comes the answer- ‘Imtiaz Ali, Raj Kumar Hirani, Karan
Johar &Aditya Chopra.’
This 28 year old wants to earn respect rather than stardom. He says " Stardom puts you in the public eye as long as your fil is a hit. And the minute you are out of sight you are forgotten. I want to be in the Raj Kumar rao class of actor. His performances alone have made him a name to reckon with." but with his choice of films so far(or is a choihe hasn't had much room to showcase any talent as such. So I guess he'll be looking for that 'great' script to give definition to his budding career. But that's not happened yet.
So will this ‘Cute Kameena’ set hearts aflutter this coming March 18? The answer lies in the box office returns of the film and we’ll know soon enough!
