#Madaari sshhh Desh So Raha Hai(Hindi) Rating: * * ½ Nishikant Kamat uses the ‘A Wednesday’ device ( which now appears gimmicky)to turn the kidnapping of a Home Minister’s son into a fight for justice in which the common man pits himself against the system with an aim to winning hearts and proving his point in the bargain. The narrative has it’s interesting, pungent, pinchhitting, bitter, heartfelt moments but the choppy editing and the obviously contrived plotting leaves the viewer largely unaffected. #MCream(Hindi) Rating: * * Neither deep nor transcendental, just Sloshed and high on euphoric imaginings, this one gets wobbly and shaky as the runtime prolongs. It appears inspired by a 70’s Hippy India mindset and has it’s principal four characters road ‘trip’ through Dharamshala and the scenic Himalayan ranges for it’s philosophical, spiritual & activist refuge but it doesn’t work. #Kabali(Tamil/Hindi) Rating: * * Shoring up the fantasia image of benevolence that the Thalaiva has cultivated over the years (through subsequent films and fan powered popular iconography) espousing his generosity and valor, ‘Kabali’ is a trivial pursuit that may satisfy the fans (because they crave for repetition) but is sure to leave the others quite dissatisfied. An ageing Gangster ( also goes back in time reprising exploits of his youth for nostalgia seekers) donning the mantle of Robin hood/Messiah for the tamils/Dalits while rescuing his daughter (in Malaysia where he has a sizeable fan base) just doesn’t suit anymore. The Style King struts his pop iconisms with the usual chutzpah but it’s getting tedious and boring now. #RadhikaApte as always is a joy to behold. The film has a lot of firsts in terms of marketing and outreach but it’s ‘Not A First!’ Gawd knows why people( read paid media) are making a song and dance of a Rajni film. #StarTrekBeyond(English/3D) Rating: * * * As a sequel meant to keep the flagging interest in this sci-fi adventure franchise going, it does just about enough. But as a standalone unusual experience it fails. In fact there’s hardly anything new here other than the spec less production design, imaginative scaling and computer animatronix. The human element even with the sexing up of previously remote and seeming sexless beings, and the action finale barely adds-up to a little more involvement and intrigue than before.
