WESTMORELAND, JAMAICA. Following the catastrophic landfall of Hurricane Melissa on Jamaica’s southern coast, the Peter Tosh Foundation is launching an urgent relief campaign: Rebuild Jamaica to help rebuild damaged communities in Belmont -Bluefields, Westmoreland, the region where reggae legend Peter Tosh grew up.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall on October 28, 2025, as a historic Category 5 storm, unleashing sustained winds of up to 185 mph and rainfall exceeding 30 inches in many areas. This is the strongest hurricane ever recorded to strike Jamaica, and among the most powerful in Atlantic history, and the damages are estimated to cost between $8-9 Billion.

The storm brought destructive winds, torrential rain, flash flooding, storm surge, and landslides that left affected areas devastated. Homes were obliterated or left without roofs, and damaged infrastructure has impeded relief efforts. Hospitals and schools have become emergency shelters for thousands of displaced residents.
Weeks after landfall, many communities are still without reliable access to power, water, and essential services.

Relief Campaign and Community Partnership

Foundation is leading a fundraising and relief campaign to support Peter Tosh Town, a long-term community development project based in Bluefields.
Funds will be directed to trusted local organizations and community leaders distributing food, clean water, emergency supplies, temporary shelter, as well as materials for home and school repairs. All donations will go directly to on-the-ground efforts such as rebuilding LONG-TERM sustainable housing solutions homes, restoring schools, repairing infrastructure, and providing safe housing for displaced families, always with a commitment to transparency and community-led decision-making.

Continuing Peter Tosh’s Legacy

“We remember Peter not just as a musician, but as a visionary for social change, a man whose roots were planted firmly in Westmoreland,” said Niambe McIntosh, chairperson of the board of the Peter Tosh Foundation and daughter of Peter Tosh. “As Hurricane Melissa has unraveled the community that shaped him, our mission has never been more urgent: to bring hope, resources, and restoration home.” The Foundation was already working to build up communities in Jamaica before the hurricane, and will continue those efforts even in times of extreme hardship. Beyond disaster response, the Foundation supports educational initiatives, cultural enrichment, and sustainable economic programs with the goal of empowering residents across Westmoreland and other underserved communities. “In Peter’s spirit, our work does not end with rebuilding,” McIntosh said. “It is a commitment to justice, dignity, and opportunity; to uplift communities so that they can thrive long after the storm has passed.”

About the Peter Tosh Foundation
The Peter Tosh Foundation, established in 2018 by Niambe McIntosh and the Tosh family, builds on Peter Tosh’s legacy of music, activism, and social justice.

Peter Tosh was a Grammy Award–winning solo artist and founding member of The Wailers. He came from humble beginnings in Westmoreland and moved as a teenager to Kingston’s Trench Town, where his extraordinary talent and political voice emerged. Alongside Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, he co-founded the band that would become one of the highest-selling groups in the world. His solo career flourished with landmark records like Legalize It and Equal Rights, carrying bold calls for social justice, human rights, and empowerment for the marginalized.

In 2018 his family created the Peter Tosh Foundation to continue his activism through community-focused programs designed to uplift underserved areas of Jamaica and create opportunities through education, humanitarian outreach, cultural development, and sustainable economic opportunity. So help us Come Together to Rebuild Jamaica.

Among its flagship initiatives is Peter Tosh Town in Belmont–Bluefields, a long-term community development project intended to foster empowerment, equity, and sustainable growth for future generations.
