#TanuWedsManuReturns(Hindi) Rating: * * * ½ Wild Enchantment. Kangana Ranaut’s sterling ‘double’ turn in this fantastic romedy will keep you rollicking in the aisles right through. The wildly imagined plot is held strong by superbly toned and tuned ensemble performances, an earthy rootedness in milieu, wickedly funny dialogues and smart use of music-both old and new! Anand L Rai has a winner on his hands-no doubts about that! #Madhavan #KanganaRanaut #AnandLRai #MohdZeeshanAyub #JimmyShergill #SwaraBhaskar #RajeshSharma #DeepakDobriyal #EijazKhan #RaindropSolutions #ErosInternational #ColourYellowPictures
#Surkhaab(Hindi) Rating: * * ½ A film that details the illegal immigrant story with some thriller elements but handled in a style that neither brings on the thrills nor allows for any great emotional involvement. Strong on story and performances but everything else is oft-kilter. Lead actress Barkha Madan probably knew this wouldn’t get her anywhere –probably that’s why she preferred to be annointed a Buddhist nun instead. #BarkhaMadan #SumitSuri #KanzaFeris #VineetaMalik #NareshGosain #SanjayTalreja #MoesArtPR #GoldenGateCreationsIndia #PVRDirectorsRare #PVRPictures
#Extraordinari(Hindi) Rating: *1/2 Ordinary pickings. The story had potential but the treatment which reeks of opportunism and seeks to capitalize on a bohemian set of values doesn’t come-off as something worthy of patronage. #RituparnaSenGupta #ShahbaazKhan #SatyajitDesai #SunandaShyamalMitra #SanjayBhowmickPR #TheMagiqTouch
#BigGame(English) Rating: * * * a typically big bombastic Hollywood pic from Finnish director Jalmari Helander who attempts to marry native Finnish folk-lore with mainstream Western stereotypes and manages to achieve a heart-warmer that sends out a strong message to the pre-teens. #SamuelLJackson #OnniTommila #RayStevenson #MehmetKurtulus #VictorGarber #TedLevine #FelicityHuffman #JimBroadbent #JormaTomilla

#Poltergeist(English) Rating: * * ½ An ineffectual revisit of the 1982 classic effects laden supernatural event movie that saw the teaming up of Director Tobe Hooper(The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) with Steven Spielberg producing one of the best paranormal thrillers in contemporary times- one that became a benchmark for future horror thrillers. This one fails to earn it’s strikes!

A Rollicking Entertainer!
Film: Tanu Weds Manu Returns
Cast:Kangana Ranaut, Madhavan, Jimmy Shergill, Mohd Zeeshan Ayub, Swara Bhaskar, Eijaz Khan, Deepak Dobriyal
Director: Anand L Rai
Rating: * * *1/2
I must admit I went into this film as a skeptic. I wasn’t all that impressed by Anand L Rai’s ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ even though it managed to deliver a few jollies along the way. His ‘Raanjhanaa’ w
as definitely off-putting for me though it was considered a moderate hit at the Box-office so at best I expected him to make another attempt at an audience friendly cackler and probably achieve middling success. But ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ is another thing altogether. It’s a conceptually bohemian, wildly entertaining and smartly assembled romedy that might zap your intelligence but never fails to keep you in splits. That’s the measure of an all-out entertainer and Anand L Rai does a wonderful job keeping it all together, tight and evenly spaced with each character getting his due without much ado. Of course it’s Kangana who cracks the glass ceiling here and dons the hat of the hero- a double whammy that will keep you in awe of her phenomenal talent in the years ahead.
Screenwriter Himanshu Sharma does a fantastic job designing a narrative that is both natively rooted and bohemian in it’s wickedly funny outpourings. The story picks up from where the first ended. The couple are in London for the past four years and have not been having a happily ever after as envisaged previously. The narrative opening has them undergoing a session at a psychiatric facility where both stridently posture about their irreconcilable differences in front of the psychiatrist who appears to have a bias against the husband and promptly has him locked up in the asylum the minute he raises his voice in frustration. It’s quite an unbelievable set-up for what is to follow.
Tanu(Kangana Ranaut) is quite gung-ho about that and has no remorse at all. She wastes no time fleeing the foreign country, returning back to a wary family, who just don’t have the wits to handle her break-all-the-rules individualism. The minute she enters Lucknow she flirts with her old boyfriend who happens to be the rickshaw owner who is cycling her homeward. Once she steps inside the home she is confronted by law student paying guest, Chintu (Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub) who wastes no time in befriending her. With him in tow she revisits her old haunts including her most ardent ex-flame Raja Awasthi(Jimmy Shergill) who has gone all religious and is looking forward to marrying her lookalike a Haryanvi, Kusum( a Tom boyish Kangana) a reputed athlete at the state level. But a phone call by Tanu to her brother-in-law Pappi(Deepak Dobriyal)puts paid to all those far-reaching plans. Pappi is informed about his brother, Manu(Madhavan)’s incarceration in an asylum in London and wastes no time getting there to help set him free. They return to India post haste and is served a divorce notice, as a welcome home present. The unbelievably wild twists and turns continue till the plot is brought to boiling point and a happily ever after cure is devised for all that heart-burn that came before it.
Though the film is nestled in rusticity and bucolic charm, it’s not in the least bit realistic. Both Tanu and Kusum are characters unshackled by either conservatism or gender stereotypes. They are in fact the heroes here. Tanu drinks, smokes, shows a distinct lack of remorse for her husband’s plight, has no qualms about admitting that she is looking for excitement and won’t be shackled to a bore for the rest of her life and gets right back into her familiar flirtations the minute she lands on Indian soil. She is badass yet lovable. Kusum/Datto is hardworking, athletic and takes pride in her achievements. She fears no one and is bold enough to take on stalkers without a qualm. She is also strong enough to take on her ‘khap’ in the name of love. Both Tanu and Kusum are inspirational(though unrealistic) ideals that small town folk might be easily charmed by. Both characters have empathy behind them so you get nudged into rooting for them even though they seem so impractical and improbable.
Anand L Rai has a native understanding of the milieu he sets his films in and that adds to the authenticity of the experience. The quirks in each character are highlighted brilliantly allowing for a barrel full of laughs. The obvious plot flaws get overlooked in the multiple dramas that are played out at a pace that doesn’t allow for any deep rumination. Rai also manages to carve out perfectly rendered performances from every member of his cast. Kangana Ranaut delivers an impressive double turn- each one distinctively different from the other. Her confidence in her own skill sets has grown to a level where she makes even the most difficult scene look easy. Madhavan oozes affecting charm and is an effective foil to Kangana’s brash histrionics. Swara Bhaskar, Eijaz Khan, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, Jimmy Shergill, Rajesh Sharma, K K Raina all pull off sharply delineated performances and Deepak Dobriyal does the wickedly funny with great fervor- unfortunately he does tend to go over the top quite a bit from time to time. The music by Krsna Solo and Tanishk-Vayu also adds muscle to the entertainment. Hemal Kothari edits the film to a nicety and Chirantan Das’ cinematography adds color , texture and verve to the visual experience. Don’t miss this bus-this is one entertainer that will keep you rollicking in the aisles –for sure!
