Citylights(Hindi)
Rating: * * * 2013 Sundance hottie, ‘Metro Manila’ repackaged with an Indian
set-up and milieu- But this Hansal Mehta directed quickie doesn’t guarantee the
same degree of engagement mainly because it comes across as contrived and unaffecting.
The nuances and grittiness of the original are sorely missing. Music and
performances are first rate though!
Kuku Mathur ki Jhand Ho
Gayi(Hindi) Rating: * * Yet another Balaji attempt to tap into the
humorous vein goes sour. Ever since ‘Delhi belly’ and ‘Fukrey’ filmmakers have
tried to make Delhi the focus of their inveterate quirky comedies. This one
tires despite new faces and director. The onset is trying and the endgame quite
ludicrous. Not worth your paisa!
Raid 2(English) Rating:
* *
* 1/2 A testosterone inducing top-of-the-genre
fight movie, designed as an assaultive massacre of the senses, this orgy of
mutilation, pulverizing action and violence gives nihilism new meaning. Definitely
not meant for the feint hearted!
Maleficent(English/3D)
Rating: * * ½ Anjolina Jolie’s Diva-like evil fairy look
adds weight to her brand as a Hollywood star but it does little for a film that
gives you the point-of-view of the Wicked fairy from ‘Sleeping beauty.’ So it’s
not a fairy tale as we know and like it- it’s more of a dark tale about revenge
and redemption! This one could be too confusing for the little ones!
Blended(English)
Rating: * * * For
once Adam Sandler doesn’t go overboard with the smaltz, unpalatable riffs and
bed taste. This film is a ‘blended’ romcom that holds your attention and
provides the right amount of laughs throughout!
The Nut
Job(English/Animation) Rating: * * ½ The character detailing and animation are
first rate but the visually hurried narrative pacing and lack of genuine laughs
makes it too tedious to recommend.
