#RangRasiya Rating: * * ½ Trivializing art history. An uneven patchwork quilt woven around an tragic-romance between an artist and his muse with some tradition bending murmurings as a paean to modernity. Picks up steam in the second half but by then it’s already too late to completely engage. #NandanaSen & #RandeepHooda do manage to show off their earnestness to good effect though! #PENInternational #MAYAMovies #DeepaSahi #AnandMahendroo #KetanMehta #RandeepHooda #NandanaSen #PareshRawal #JayantilalGada #ParulGossain #VikramGokhale #DarshanJariwala
#TheShaukeens (Hindi) Rating: * * ½ not-so-seamless Cross pollination of a frugally appreciated age-old lascivious geriatric resuscitation (remake of 1982 classic comedy "Shaukeen") with a personally sponsored ego-trip. Hindi Film Review
Johnson Thomas
Twin thrusted remake
Film:The Shaukeens
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Annu Kapoor, Piyush Mishra, Anupam Kher, Lisa Hayden
Director: Abhishek Sharma
Rating: * * ½
One movie old (Tere Bin Laden) Abhishek Sharma attempts to lend a new twist to the 1980 comedy, ‘Shaukeen’ elevated by the presence of beloved stalwarts like Utpal Dutt, Ashok Kumar and A.K.Hangal essaying the roles of lascivious geriatrics in search of some sleazy fun. With story, screenplay and Dialogues by Tigmanshu Dhulia, this regurgitated effort was expected to be above the common place. And it is – but in bits and parts only.
The segments with the three old men, essayed entirely in caricatured fashion by Anupam Kher, Piyush Mishra and Annu Kappor as they go into hot pursuit after the delectable, free spirited Ahana( Lisa Hayden) in Mauritius, are devoid of any great reasons for engagement. Not much humor to be had in their slap stick attempts to go mod and out-do each other with the hopes of scoring with the lovely damsel who happens to be the biggest fan of Superstar Akshay kumar (who plays himself). That entire run of play is a dead bore with no laughs to be had and little visual engagement .
It’s the segments featuring the pursuit of excellence by a star on the downswing and his encounters with a national award winning Bengali filmmaker(Subrat Dutta), against the good business sense of his endorsement manager(Cyrus Broacha) and commercial minded director friend(Manoj Joshi), that brings in interest and smiles in decent measure. This subplot in fact could well have been an entire film and might have garnered much more fun and entertainment than the twin-thrusted monotony that masquerades as a remake in the hopes of cashing in on a well-remembered brand.
