The title ‘Waiting’ itself says it all. The film is about two people who come in contact with each other while waiting for their loved ones to come out of the near fatal injuries they have been subjected to (by the screenplay).
Rajat Deshpande( Arjun Mathur) an active, sporty young man meets with an accident while on a trip out with his friends. His wife Tara(Kalki) is left bereft and alone at the hospital, with all other social ties to family torn by contentious dysfunctions. Childless, contended couple Shiv Kumar (Naseeruddin Shah) and his wife Pankaja (Suhasini Mani Ratnam) have an ideal relationship that goes topsy-turvy when she falls into a seemingly irrecoverable coma. Having spent four decades and more, together in loving harmony, Shiv obviously doesn’t want to let go despite pressure from the doctors. Shiv and Tara meet and strike up a hesitant communication which develops into a sort of friendship despite being from different walks of life and different generations. It’s a May-December friendship that helps them cope with the different stages of grief and loss before coming to terms with their lives from thereon.
The film is sensitively handled and evenly paced. The hospital setting is beautifully laid out – much like a beautifully landscaped wellness center. It’s not the kind of hospital we see in real life though. We don’t get to see many patients and even the doctors we come in contact with on screen are the ones treating the two patients. The minimalistic rendering doesn’t aid believability though. Also the second half of the film tends to go a little off track with Tara and Shiv engaging in a dance while enjoying loud music to signal a decisive moment in their lives. It doesn’t quite gel with what has gone before and seems a little too radical a gambit to curry favor with the audience. As character graphs go, Tara is believable while Shiv plays against type. The emotional intimacy that develops between these two characters is also not completely believable. The dialogues go from brilliant to inane. Both Kalki and Naseer put in brilliant performances while Suhasini and Arjun provide strong spousal support- which go a long way in keeping the attachment going. The camerawork by Neha Parti Mtiyani is bright and welcoming and along with the unobtrusive background score, lends harmonious depth to the drama. Anu Menon, who previously helmed the turkey ‘London, Paris, New York’ seems to have come into stronger coherence and craft with this outing. It’s light, fairly dramatic and quite interesting in it’s lay up. It’s brief forays into humor and positivity is what stays with you though.

#VeerappanTheTruthAboutTheKillingOfVeerappan(Hindi) Rating: * * RGV’s umpteenth attempt to glorify criminality, this one, a sort of biopic about the escape artist criminal who savaged over 194 people including police officers and massacred over 900 elephants for their ivory and subsequently eluded the entire police force of three states, doesn’t get beyond sketchy and gimmicky. Camerawork is the usual weird angled and dizzying while writing and performances are pretty much amateurish. #RamGopalVermaFilms #TheCompany #ViikingMediaAndEntertainment #TSeries #SandeepBhardwaj #SachinJoshi #LisaRay #AAFilmsNationwide #Ibrahim #PearlMedia Runtime: 128 mins
#Frederick (Hindi) Rating: * * ½ B grade psychological action thriller with no pretensions, this one works it’s way through plenty of mayhem before it can deliver it’s fait accompli. Script is a little loose but performances are solid. It’s interesting but not thrilling. Convoluted plotting, Songs and flash backs act as a dampener to the enjoyment though.. #MTarun #EvanaEntertainment #RajeshButalia #ManishKaralia #MK #TulnaButalia #PrashanttNarayanan #AvinashDhyani #DwaparCommunications #HimanshuJhunjhunwala Runtime: 125 mins
#Waiting(Hindi) Rating: * * * coming together in grief, this film about two people stymied by tragedy, trying to cope with the different stages of grief and loss before coming to terms with their lot. Does destiny offer them some hope that their lives may after all get back on track? The script may be a bit hollowed out but the performances, camerawork and amiable chemistry between the two lead actors lends it quite a bit of heft. #KalkiKoechlin #NaseeruddinShah #ArjunMathur #SuhasiniManiratnam #RajatKapoor #ParullGossainPR #AnuMenon #PritiGupta #ManishMundra #IshkaFilms #DrishyamFilms Runtime: 98 mins
#Phobia(Hindi) Rating: * * * A potent Psycho-thriller. Using Agoraphobia as the tool to create a psychotic drama full of possibilities, the #RaginiMMS director #PavanKripalani dreams up quite a strong turbulence before letting us know that there’s much more than the obvious, staring you in the face. Smart, intelligent & thrilling, aided by superb theatrics from the lead cast. #NextGenFilms #ErosInternational #PavanKripalani #VickiRajani #SunilLulla #RadhikaApte #SatyadeepMishra #YashaswiniDayama #AnkurVikal #JayakrishnaGummadi #PoojaLadhaSurti #DanielBGeorge Runtime: 95 mins
#AliceThroughTheLookingGlass(Rating) Rating: * * A return to the Madhatters ball with a lot more action and little justification, but not in the style and panache that Tim Burton imagined for the original outing. This one feels half-finished, the production design, costumes, effects and performances don’t appear to have hit the mark. #DisneyUTV #UniversalCommunications #ParagDesai #DisneyFilmsIndia #JohnnyDepp #SachaBaronCohen #MiaWasikowska #HelenaBonhamCarter #AnneHathaway #RhysIfans #MattLucas #EdSpeleers #StephenFry #TobyJones #AlanRickman #MichaelSheen #TimothySpall #PaulWhitehouse #BarbaraWindsor #JamesBobin Runtime: 118 mins
#AngryBirds(English) Rating: * * Tiresome&Tedious.Richly colorful but intellectually suspect. Bird Brained so-to-speak. This computer game to cinema reproduction is neither funny nor gamey. The action is childish and the voicing quite indistinct. Also the patchy script doesn’t aid coherence. Altogether quite a misadventure. #SonyPictures #AnjaliMalhotra #ThinkInkCommunications #JasonSudeikis #JoshGad #DannyMcBride #BillHader #MayaRudolph #PeterDinklage #KeganMichaelKey #KateMcKinnon #TonyHale #IkeBarinholtz #HannibalBuress

#Thithi(Kannada/EnglishSubtitles) Rating: * * * ½ Delightfully Sublime, this masterly bitter-sweet tale(a fable really) about how avariciousness and greed overtake filial affection and respect makes it’s mark with subtle, contextual rendering, a beautifully laid out script, absorbingly laid out narrative, riveting camerawork and earthy performances by non-professional actors.
