Synopsis: Straight man Nick (Jason Bateman), horndog Kurt (Jason Sudeikis), and comic sidekick Dale (Charlie Day) have started their own business, named, of course, “Nick & Kurt & Dale.” After a television appearance goes horribly wrong, our three stooges run into trouble getting the financing for their sure-to-be-popular “Shower Buddy.” They turn to investor Rex Hanson ( Chris Pine) and his infamous father Bert (a completely wasted Christoph Waltz), who agree to finance the first wave of Shower Buddies to hit the market. Of course, it’s all a scam, and the Hansons plan to bankrupt and takeover the business.
Review:
It’s weird how even Hollywood tries to generate a franchise out of middling almost-no-shows. ‘Horrible Bosses’ wasn’t much of a successful comedy and had very little purchase despite a wry social commentary agenda. This second edition doesn’t even have that much!
There’s in fact very little reason for this sequel other than the piling on of a surfeit of bad jokes heavy on sexual innuendo, in order to tickle the funny bone of a frustrated lot of cine goers.
Kurt , Nick and whiny, tiny Dale after being severely short-changed by their sponsor now have to make a go for it on their own. Nick & Kurt & Dale plot to kidnap Rex and hold him for ransom. Small problem: Rex is crazy. And our heroes are relatively moronic. That’s a dangerous combination. It all leads to misunderstandings, violent escapades, and plot twists that shouldn’t really have been there in the first place. An over-sexed Julia (Jennifer Aniston) getting support group therapy, a double-talking “MF” Jones (Jamie Foxx), and even convicted Dave (Kevin Spacey) return to this ridiculously exaggerated scenario in order to shore up the laughs- without much success though. Crude sexual content and bad language are of course par for the course. Writer-Director Sean Anders makes it a ‘How much more dirtier and repulsive can it get?’ contest and this one would probably win the contest hands down , when compared to the first edition which was no lame duck by any yardstick.
But dirty doesn’t stick it. This louder effort to repeat the same excessive, repugnant shenanigans of three cerebrally dysfunctional adult males, doesn’t have much punch and the social commentary is missing. In terms of performances one can’t really say much because the actors were probably doing what was expected of them. The writing is certainly pedestrian though and the treatment highly overambitious in it’sattempt to generate comedy. Horrendous , really!
