February 28,29 and March 2020, Mumbai: The primary focus of Keli festival is to preserve the classical and traditional art forms of India through live performances and awareness programs keeping their authenticity intact. In this edition, Keli is presenting Mattannur Sreeraj the young and exclusively talented contemporary Thayambaka performer. He will be leading this festival and through this festival he will be unveiling the evolution of the art form of Thayambaka through three marvellous concerts playing three different indigenous rhythm patterns .

Mattannur Sreeraj is a contemporary genius performer. He follows an aesthetic with an insight that the classical base of art form is neither boundaries nor limiting factors of any art forms but are guidelines like the tracks of a running competition. Talent and improvisation are the factors that contemporises the art form. That is how an artist becomes the responsible torch bearer of a tradition. He has the huge responsibility to safe guard the purity of its classical base, contemporise the media and ensure that it’s never a play for the gallery but a process of elevating the audience to the artistic height of the art form.

"Art defines an era, making sure ours isn’t forgotten.'' This is the art ethics that Keli follows in each and every project. For this particular project, Keli chooses an exclusive genius in Thayambaka tradition who will unveil the evolution of Thayambaka through 3 different performances of Thayambaka which has marked 3 phases of the history of Thayambaka by the legend Mattannur Sreeraj who addresses the art form on its classical base with progressive vision of aesthetics. " says Festival Director, Ramachandran K.

Rhythm From times immemorial, as rhythm and music evolved all over the world, rhythm accompanied music. But in the case of Kerala it was the other way round. Here rhythm ingested music, and orchestrated a different aural art tradition through highly developed rhythm-structures generating many rhythm ensembles. Quite clearly, these ensembles are the most sophisticated and perhaps the oldest percussion marvels in the world. Thayambaka, is one such unique Percussion performance in this genre that Kerala has contributed to world music and rhythm.

Thayambaka Chenda is a traditional drum of Kerala. Chenda has two sides, one treble side and one bass side. Thayambaka is a solo rhythm performance usually performed on the Chenda. Thayambaka consists of a chief drummer, an associate and 10-12 accompanying drummers and cymbal players. Thayambaka performance starts with a slow tempo displaying the tonal purity of beats. Then the Thayambaka enters the next phase show casing the structural beauty of its rhythm pattern. Gradually it enters the next stage of a mid tempo. Then the performance progresses into a Faster tempo finally culminating into a vigorous, fastest, thrilling and scintillating finale. Double Thayambaka is a more vigorous version of Thayambaka in which the ensemble will be led by two chief percussionists. Ramachandran- Festival Director, Keli ramk.keli@gmail.com
