#Shamitabh(Hindi)Rating:  * * * Unusual but not satisfying. #RBalki does yet another ga-ga-set on #AmitabhBachchan, this time giving him a series of repetitive monologues as a tribute to his so-called phenomenal acting prowess. The Advertising guru that Balki is, this film will probably do more for the Bachchan brand than for Bollywood cinema. The film’s concept story with the now expected ‘twist’ is more of a promotional video for Bachchan’s talents than a cinema worth ruminating over. This is basically a showboat for the three main leads that also includes #Dhanush and #AksharaHaasan. Too indulgent and self-congratulatory to be deemed worthy.  #RaindropMedia #ParagDesai #UniversalCommunications #Dhanush #AksharaHaasan #RBalki #AmitabhBachchan #AbhishekBachchan #ErosInternational #MADEntertainment #BalajiMotionPictures #HOPEProductions

#JaiJawanJaiKisan(Hindi)Rating:  * ½ poor conceptualization and singular lack of vision deals a death blow to a story that could have become an inspiration for the new generation.  An inglorious  biopic on former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri's glorious life. This film plays out in amateurish, kindergarten playschool fashion with actors parroting lines without any of the essence of it coming through. The lack of inspiration in the telling is quite galling.  #MilanAjmera #AshwaniShukla #AltairMedia #KishanPaliwal #VictoriousEnterprises #SanjayChakraborty #JatinKhurana #OmPuri #PremChopra #RatiAgnihotri #RishiBhutani #AkhileshJain #MadanLalKhurana #PankajDua #SeemaChakrborthy

#HumTumDushmanDushman(Hindi) Rating: * Too dysfunctional to be appreciated. Poor craft and zero tension makes this quite a tedious and unremitting experience.  #DollarGroupInternational #IqbalDurrani #MashaalDurrani #TapasPaul #SohiniPaul #MukeshRishi #EhsanKhan #ShahbaazKhan #poojaSaxena #MushtaqKhan #MohanAyyer

#IAmOffended (English/Hindi) Rating:  * * ½  Topical, timely but not effective. An interesting though lethargic documentary about the growing intolerance against stand-up comic acts in the India. Too casual to be serious. Defiant but not powerful. The funnymen give voice to their angst but fail to turn it into a power stroke. There’s not much humor, wit or energy on display here and that’s a sore point for a documentary that seeks to represent Indian stand-up comediennes’ first major salvo against repression! #JohnnyLever #VirDas #RajuSrivastav #VarunGrover #SanjayRajoura #AditiMittal #SorabhPant #TanmayBhat #GursimranKhamba #AshishShakya #RohanJoshi #RajeevNigam #RajneeshKapoor #PuLaDeshpande #hardlyAnonymous #SaturdayFilms #Love&Faith #VijayalakshmiRajan #MilindDhaimade #JaideepVarma

#WildCard(English)Rating: * *  #SimonWest’s meandering remake of the 1987 #BurtReynold action thriller sparks inter-mittent interest at best. Too much of contemplation with mini bursts of action.  #JasonStatham #WilliamGoldman #B4U #VenessaRoy #RelativityMedia #PSLive #SimonWest

#TheBoyNextDoor((English) Rating: * *  Gender reversed ‘FatalAttraction’ lacks eroticism and thrills. Poor acting and even poor direction make it quite a damp squib. #JupiterAscending(English) Rating: * * ½  #Wachowski charm can do little to make this female antagonist lead sci-fi adventure to hit the right notes. It’s big but not exactly beautiful or exciting. Promises much more than it can deliver.Visually extravagant but conceptually wanting. Spectacular action can’t cover-up the dubiousness of character motivations.   #ChanningTatum #WarnerBros #MilaKunis #WachowskiBros #AnkitAgarwal

Costumed Heroics

Film: Baji
Cast: Shreyas Talpade, Jitendra Joshi, Amruta Khanvilkar
Director: Nikhil Mahajan

Rating: * * *

Runtime: 2 hrs 45 mins

Nikhil(Pune 52) Mahajan takes another track in his second film. it’s an action film with a super-hero story- a la Zorro, channeling desi history to make it homespun. So while the super hero covers his face and rides a horse, he also sports a tilak and has an ancient tradition and an underground secret to lend him authenticity.
Chidvilas(Shreyas Talpade) is childish and rash. He runs a small provision store in the village , Srirangpur , where he resides with his mother. He is also in love with his best friend Gauri(Amruta Khanvilkar) who doesn’t want to go there as her ideal mate is someone like Baji, the masked crusader who rescued her from an accident when she was just a little girl. Chidu doesn’t have any of the qualities of Baji other than his desire to help everyone without paying heed to consequence.
Srirangpur has a secret. As per ancient myth, there’s a lot of gold hidden below the land and Martand(Jitendra Joshi)’s father had perished in his obsessive search for it. After having found a small taste of it, Martand gets searching and enslaves the entire village folk in that attempt while killing off Chidu and his own best friend. Baji needs to save the day but no one from the village has seen Baji for decades despite him being the avowed protector of the village folk. Will he come and rescue the village from Martand’s cruelty?
The script takes interesting turns and incorporates some ingenious moments by telling the story in a sort of three-tier format. First it’s about Chidu and Gauri, then Martand’s  growing  obsession and finally comes Baji’s entry.. but is he the real one?
The performances are what distinguishes this effort the most. Shreyas Talpade swings effortless between being a sort of village idiot to the brave, powerful fighter protector. His voice, manner and attitudes show a masked change when he dons the other character.  His transition is noteworthy. Amruta Khanvilkar, back on screen after a hiatus, does well to lend Gauri a certain dignified prettiness.  Jitendra Joshi excels as  Martand, with an ease and felicity that are hallmarks of great actors. The menace and paranoia he exhibits is pretty much the strongest point of the film. He is in fact one of the most memorable villains of recent times. Nikhil Mahajan, the director, does well to give the film strong narrative depth and grittiness. He keeps the melodrama to a minimum while taking the story forward. The bone crushing action and crafty story-telling adds to the creditability of the enterprise. Worth a watch!
