English film review
Johnson Thomas
Film: Divergent  :  Young adult thriller

Director: Neil Burger

Rating: *  * ½

Running Time: 143 min.

Synopsis:In a future where the population is divided by personality types, one woman branded "Divergent" uncovers a conspiracy to eliminate all who bear her misfit label, and attempts to find out what makes the powers-that-be so frightened of them before time runs out. Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) and Theo James (Underworld: Awakening) star in this action thriller adapted from the novel by Veronica Roth, and directed by Neil Burger (The Illusionist, Limitless)

Fitful tension and interesting psycho turns keeps this film fairly engrossing. But the thrills are not set=up in a manner to generate maximum enjoyment.

The film is all about finding your identity, about searching for your soul, determining who you are and how you fit into this futuristic world. But some seem to be blessed with more qualities than others and they become threats to the leadership(Kate Winslet). So a cover-up is organized and our young heroine is set0up to be just part of what she can be. The subterfuge doesn’t last though as tests are conducted regularly and finally she has to find  a way out of the tangle od deceits in order to stay alive.

Despite being adapted from the wildly popular young adult novel of the same name, Divergent doesn’t play out like a traditional thriller. It’ takes up a lot of time in exposition and set-up and the resultant engagement is less than climactic. With the exception of a few major set pieces—the zip-line ride from the top of the John Hancock Center, for example—"Divergent" is a rather dark and heavy endeavor.

The largely handheld camerawork is always competent. Youthful elements like a trance-infused score by Junkie XL and a clever collection of indie rock, electronica and hip-hop, add beat and zest!

Shailene Woodley  resurrects the sweetness of Jennifer Lawrence from the Hunter Games but she isn’t ordained with as much power , action or smarts. This film in comparision to ‘The Hunter Games’ is just a poor cousin. Nothing spectacular to keep you engaged!
