High tension, creepy horror thriller!

Synopsis:

Quite an inventive plotline this. A sexually transmitted haunting plagues a Detroit teenager in this stylized horror film from director David Robert Mitchell (The Myth of the American Sleepover). In the wake of sleeping with a handsome stranger, Jay (Maika Monroe) quickly learns that she has inherited a most unusual curse: wherever she goes, lumbering, half-naked phantoms follow, and their singular goal is to see her dead. Desperate, Jay turns to her younger sister and loyal circle of friends, for help. In time, however, Jay learns that her only hope for escaping death is to sleep with someone else, and pass the curse on. But the pursuing phantoms are invisible to Jay's friends and it soon becomes apparent that her time is running out. Now, with death closing in, the terrified young woman will be forced to make a difficult decision if she hopes to survive her terrifying ordeal

 

Review:

This film has a strong philosophical underpinning about teenage sexual promiscuity and moral irreverence. Yet it manages to play like a straightforward horror flick with effectively terrifying scares and nail biting tension. This film has the power to unsettle you and make your thoughts go berserk. And for the younger generation, this is one film that’s easy to identify with because what it does is plays around with your unexpressed fears and turns it into a mammoth monster that eats away at your insecurities leaving a deep gaping hole in it’s wake. Metaphorically that is.  

 

With a title like "It Follows," you really wonder what the movie is all about… nothing’s clear before you go in to the theatres.  This second feature by writer/director David Robert Mitchell ("The Myth of the American Sleepover"), works beautifully because it keeps the viewers curiosity and trepidation at a constant high. It’s a ghost story but not exactly in the traditional sense. The ghost creeps into a girl who has just had sex with a handsome boy, a stranger nevertheless. Or did he give it to her?

 

"It Follows" has the power to make teens take a closer look at illogical actions that could lead to long lasting consequence. And this not because of it’s premise but because of the potent manner in which it is narrated.

Jay (Maika Monroe), a quintessentially sullen teen, learns of her haunting soon after she has sex with, and gets abducted by Hugh (Jake Weary).  Once she is tied up and dizzy with chloroform, Hugh tells her everything he knows: Jay is the latest victim of a sexually-transmitted haunting. She must have sex with another person to pass it on…else she will be relentlessly pursued by someone she knows...or maybe it will be a stranger...possibly living and/or dead. No one can see that person but Jay can get hurt…brutally. Jay  tells her friends the truth , including stymied love interest Paul (Keir Gilchrist). And they consequently try to help Jay banish whatever it is that's after her.

 

For Jay, sex is meant to be momentous but after the act it becomes terribly scary. The sexual high doesn’t last for more than a few seconds after the primordial act. After that it’s a sinking feeling what with all that haunting going on.. Mitchell’s visual style includes loads of heavy duty atmosphere that creeps through the frames into your thoughts. The camera uses space so brilliantly that you experience a sense of claustrophobia in closed room settings as well as listless dread in never-ending pan-view shots. This is a terrifically effective film that horror aficionados don’t dare miss!
