This film is set in a remand home and tells the story of how the young under-age, incarcerated girls there, are exploited in the flesh trade by the caretakers-criminal-politician-police nexus.
Director Ashish Deo sets out to make this film a socio-political expose on the dark, behind-the-scenes shenanigans of a corrupt, sleazy and sex-starved administration. It’s a harsh and stinging take that gets diluted because of Deo’s penchant for using mainstream Bollywood tropes to liven up the engagement. An item number appears out of the blue and the vulgar language uttered and heinous treatment meted out to the girls in captivity, is not an easy sight. The fact that the censors were far more liberal to this film than most other films of the same ilk is testament to the bias running through the censor board of late.
In fact the entire narration gets murkier and murkier as the story prolongs and the distasteful sequences towards the end will leave you with a bad taste. Deo though sincere in his efforts to expose the murkier side of remand homes, gets a little too liberal with gratuitous violence and brutality . The bit about journalists and exposes doesn’t stick either. The only thing that holds you spell-bound here is Chitrashi(Chak De) Rawat’s spunky, feisty and gritty performance as the defeatist who tries to rise to the occasion in order to save those around her who need help. But for that unalloyed performance , this film would have been just another exploitative attempt at exposing the depravity prevalent in society.
