English film review
An Exciting Thriller
Film: Run All Night
Cast: Liam Neeson, Joel Kinnaman , Natalie Martinez, Ed Harris, Common
Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
Rating: * * *
Runtime: 114 mins
A well-knit traditional thriller that gains it’
s excitement from following a mob hit-man(Liam Neeson) and his estranged son(Joel Kinnaman)as they flee the wrath of a vengeful crime boss.
High on traditional thriller technique, Jaume Collet-Serra’s ‘Run All Night’ makes for a compelling experience thanks to some sharp edged performances, economical editing and smart narration. Neeson’s role is not much different from the roles he has been portraying of late – job profile might sound otherwise though. Here he is an ageing, drunk, ex-hitman whose skills are rusting.
Jimmy Conlon (Neeson), once a notorious mob enforcer who was most feared , rumored to be behind more than a dozen murders at the behest of the infamous Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris), Conlon doesn’t have much left to live for. He’s a perennial drunk, who wakes up in the bar the next morning and just starts drinking again. Forced to beg Shawn’s son Danny (Boyd Holbrook) for money and drunkenly play Santa Claus at the Maguire Christmas party, there’s no self-respect left. He has lost touch with his only son Mike (Joel Kinnaman), who is trying to live a straight life as a limo driver with his wife (Genesis Rodriguez) and two kids (with a third on the way).
The narration focuses mainly on the two sons – one trying to gain deeper access into the criminal underworld while the other strives to stay away from a haunting past. Danny is a sociopath who will stop at nothing to gain his father’s affections and respect while Mike just wants to keep his family safe and secure and away from the world of his father. Unfortunately things don’t work out the way they plan it.
The ambitious Danny brings Albanian heroin dealers into the equation and everything goes awry thereafter. The dealers have hired Mike to drive them to a meeting with Danny. But since Dad’s not interested, Danny has to pay the price with his life and Mike is the next one on their to-do list.
Mike becomes prime target of everybody in the criminal underworld, including a high-priced assassin played with effective cool by Common, so it’s now up to his estranged dad to keep him safe till morning.
Neeson, does a terrific job portraying a ace gunman trying to regains rusted skills at a time when the stakes are sky high. He does it so matter-of-factly that at no point do you see overawed emotion creeping into his performance. he knows what he has to do and he hopes his skills are still alive and ready to kick.
Neeson and Harris in scenes together, make for compelling viewing- even if they are just a few and far between. All the actors do well to keep you convinced. The background score, cinematography and editing make it a much richer experience. This is Neeson's third film with director Jaume Collet-Serra, after Unknown and Non-Stop, and it’s by far the best too!
