#Desikattay(Hindi) Rating: *  * Two childhood friends end up as gunrunners for politicians before each finds his own calling. From #Sholay to #GangaJamuna the plot thickens with influences & even attempts to do a #MaryKom in a sharp-shooting sport but the slack telling and the stupid treatment render it unexciting. #SuneilShetty #JayBhanushali #AnandKumar #VijayGrover #AkhilKapur #SashaAgha #TiaBajpai

 Gunning for Insane

Film: Desi Kattey
Cast: Akhil Kapur, Jay Bhanushali, Suniel Shetty, Sasha Agha, Tia Bajpai, Murli Sharma

Director: Anand Kumar

Rating: *  *

Two young boys want to be like their hero Judge Sahab(Ashutosh Rana) a sort of local Don of all he surveys-in small town Kanpur. Destiny takes them on that track as they grow older , as gun runners for the local crime syndicate, and they achieve a shoo-in to lord it over the local gangs when they kill off Babloo, their hero’s chief henchman. But their hero who walks out of prison only to avenge his henchman’s death, is not amused, until the two full grown men Pali(Akhil Kapur) and Giani(Jay Bhanushali) admit to their hero-worship of him. He takes them in as his personal hitmen and uses them to further his political ambitions. In comes Major Suryakant Rathore(Suneil Shetty) who is quite impressed by their performance with the gun and want them to join his own personal secret mission. But they are not interested until he gets them out on bail following an imprisonment for illegal gun-running. Both men go into training under their new coach but Pali does not feel at home and reverts back to his hero and left-behind lady love Guddu(Tia Bajpai) while Giani decides to stay on and win accolades for India in amateur shooting at an International games competition, while also romancing Paridi(Sasha Agha) , the Major’s mealy-mouthed sister.
The influences of ‘Sholay’ , ‘Ganga Jamuna’ and most recent sporting hero bio-pics’ are pretty much blatant in the manner in which this story plays out. The treatment though is inconsistent throughout. Sometimes gritty, other times downright ridiculous, there’s no sustained logic to be had in the telling.  And there are stupidly conceived sequences to show up the lack of sensibility in the scripting department. The Jai-Veeru kind of dosti survives misunderstandings and attempts to ‘Kill’ and eventually an injured Giani wriggles out of a tight situation to win accolades for the country.

There’s absolutely no justification for what transpires on screen in terms of story progression. Uninteresting songs make it tougher to get involved. The one soulful rendition  reminiscent of ‘Ek Villain’ comes at a time when you’ve more or less given up on the film. So even that can’t do the intended trick. Popular TV star Jay Bhanushali and Vinod Khanna’s nephew Akhil Kapur manage to stay connected even when the story does not warrant it. Sasha and Tia are just wall flowers. There’s really nothing much for them to do here. While Suneil Shetty takes the cake looking mysterious and even having an inexplicable fainting spell in one scene. And of course his trademark pout continues to run riot over yet another attempt of a gritty performance. The rest of the cast are forgettable just like the movie they inhabit!
